Light off roading

I've been planning a road trip with some friends which will pass through several states. It's not something I haven't done in the past, but part of the route takes us through a section where I'll need to do some light off roading. When I say light off roading I mean some dirt roads, so hard packed surface. With no experience with something like this I have to ask about the tires and will they handle this or will I need to consider getting some replacement ones?

Those tires are really designed for pavement, so even a little loose gravel or moisture could make things dicey in a hurry. Swapping to a more adventure-oriented or dual-sport tire with a bit more tread would give you a much better grip and more confidence out there.

If it's just hard-packed dirt, most street or sport-touring tires should handle it fine, just take it easy but if it's loose or wet, you might want something more dual-purpose

Thanks for the advice. Let's say I'd be willing to get a replacement tires, what models should I aim for? Somethign that can do on and off road?

I did something similar during a trip on the backroads of Utah last year. I switched to Shinko 705 tires, while they're not meant for intense off-roading, they're great for a mix of pavement and dirt. They handled light trails pretty well and didn't vibrate too much on the highway. I think something like that could be a great fit for you

What was the outcome of your trip planning from back in May? The Shinko 705 that was mentioned is a popular option for this kind of riding. Just be certain to verify the correct tire sizes are available for your Z650 rims as that will affect handling.
